Overview

PlantPal is a mobile plant care app that helps users confidently care for their houseplants. Using AI-powered plant diagnosis, personalized care recommendations, watering reminders, and a digital plant library, the app simplifies plant care by providing accurate, easy-to-understand guidance. Whether users are new to gardening or experienced plant enthusiasts, PlantPal makes maintaining healthy plants more accessible and enjoyable.

Problem Statement

Many houseplant owners, especially beginners, struggle to identify plant health issues and often rely on scattered, conflicting online advice. This uncertainty can lead to improper care, frustration, and unhealthy or dying plants.

Solution

PlantPal simplifies plant care by helping users quickly identify plant health issues through an intuitive, visual diagnosis flow. By providing personalized, easy-to-follow recommendations, the app enables users to confidently diagnose problems and take the right steps to restore their plants' health. Usability Goal: Users can reach a plant diagnosis in three clicks or fewer, ensuring a fast, seamless, and frustration-free experience.

Research Methodology

The research aimed to understand how houseplant owners identify, diagnose, and manage plant health issues. It focused on uncovering their behaviors, pain points, and needs to inform the design of an intuitive, reliable, and user-friendly plant care experience.

Design System

The PlantPal design system was created to deliver a consistent, intuitive, and nature-inspired user experience. A soft green color palette represents growth and plant health, while a yellow accent highlights key actions and notifications. The typography combines Irish Grover for a friendly brand identity, Merriweather Sans for clear headings, and Source Sans Pro for highly readable body text. Rounded UI components, simple iconography, and plant-themed illustrations create a welcoming interface that is easy to navigate, especially for beginners. The design system ensures consistency, accessibility, and a calming visual experience while reinforcing PlantPal's mission of making plant care simple and enjoyable.

Future Vision

The future vision for PlantPal is to evolve into an intelligent, personalized plant care companion that supports users at every stage of their plant journey. By integrating AI-powered plant health diagnostics, smart reminders, and real-time care guidance, the app will help users prevent issues before they arise and build confidence in plant care.

Over time, PlantPal aims to expand into a community-driven platform where users can share progress, seek advice, and learn from other plant enthusiasts. With deeper accessibility features, offline support, and integration with smart home devices, PlantPal will grow into a seamless ecosystem that makes plant care effortless, educational, and enjoyable for everyone.

Through this project, I learned how to translate user research into meaningful design decisions by continuously incorporating user feedback throughout the design process. I strengthened my ability to balance usability with visual aesthetics while prioritizing accessibility and inclusive design. Additionally, I gained hands-on experience creating wireframes, high-fidelity prototypes, and interactive designs in Figma, as well as conducting usability testing to identify opportunities for improvement and build a solution that effectively addresses real user needs.

Participants in the PlantPal usability study described the app as intuitive, easy to navigate, and visually calming, indicating that the interface successfully supported a smooth and engaging user experience. Their feedback also validated key design decisions while highlighting opportunities for further refinement to enhance usability and overall user satisfaction.

Next Steps

The next phase of PlantPal would focus on validating the design through a larger usability study with a more diverse group of users. Based on the findings, I would refine the onboarding experience, enhance the plant diagnosis flow with more interactive feedback, and conduct accessibility testing in real-world scenarios. Also improving the size of icons and overall spacing and padding. These improvements would help create a more intuitive, inclusive, and user-centered experience while preparing the app for broader adoption.
