Overview

The app was created to simplify how travelers and long-term planners access weather information by providing clear, contextual, and multi-location insights in one place. The goal was to reduce the need for switching between multiple apps and make weather-based travel planning more intuitive, efficient, and user-friendly.

Problem Statement

Travelers and long-term planners struggle to access clear, contextual, and multi-location weather insights without switching between apps or interpreting complex data.

Solution

Design an intelligent, multi-location weather app that delivers actionable short-term forecasts and long-term trends through a clear, modern interface.

User Research Methods

To better understand how people plan around weather, I conducted qualitative research with frequent travelers and individuals who regularly plan trips, outdoor activities, and long-term stays in different locations.

Research Methods

1. Contextual Interviews

During my own travels, I spoke with travelers about how they currently check weather forecasts and make planning decisions.

Key questions included:

  • How far in advance do you check weather conditions?

  • Do you monitor weather for multiple locations at once?

  • What information is most important when planning a trip?

  • What frustrations do you experience with existing weather apps?

  • How confident do you feel making decisions based on weather forecasts?

2. Competitor Analysis

I analyzed popular weather applications such as:

  • Apple Weather

  • AccuWeather

  • The Weather Channel

  • Google Weather

The goal was to identify:

  • Common information architecture patterns

  • Forecast visualization approaches

  • Missing opportunities for multi-location planning

3. Affinity Mapping

After gathering interview insights, I grouped recurring themes and pain points to identify patterns in user behavior.

Edge Cases Considered

Digital Nomads

People planning stays across multiple cities over several weeks.

Need: Compare weather conditions across destinations before booking accommodations.

Event Planners

Users organizing outdoor events.

Need: Understand weather patterns beyond daily forecasts.

Last-Minute Travelers

Users making quick travel decisions.

Need: Fast access to critical weather information without navigating multiple screens.

International Travelers

Users unfamiliar with local climates.

Need: Contextual insights instead of raw temperature numbers.

Example:

Instead of:

14°C

Provide:

Cool and windy — consider carrying a light jacket.

Most Important Insight

People don't want weather data.

They want confidence in their decisions.

This insight became the foundation of Climatrix.

Rather than designing another weather dashboard, I focused on creating an experience that translates weather information into actionable insights, helping users quickly understand what conditions mean and how they should prepare.

Design System

Rather than relying on traditional weather icons and static gradients, I explored anime-inspired environmental backdrops to create a stronger emotional connection between users and weather conditions. Weather isn't just data, it's an experience. A rainy day feels different from a sunny afternoon, and a snowy evening carries a completely different mood. I wanted the interface to communicate these feelings visually, helping users understand not only the forecast but also the atmosphere behind it. By incorporating stylized illustrated scenes inspired by anime landscapes, each weather state becomes more immersive and memorable. Dynamic skies, soft lighting, and seasonal environments transform weather information into a visual story, making the experience feel more engaging while maintaining clarity and usability. Why This Approach? Creates an emotional connection to weather conditions Makes forecasts easier to interpret at a glance Reduces the cold, data-heavy feeling common in weather apps Gives each location and forecast a distinct personality Encourages users to engage with weather as an experience rather than just numbers

    Future Vision

Climatrix started as a design project, but I envision it becoming something more than just a weather app. As someone who loves traveling and connecting with people, I'd love to use my own trips as an opportunity to test the product in real-world scenarios, gather feedback from fellow travelers, and understand how weather influences their decisions on the go.

My long-term vision is to build a community around shared travel experiences where people can exchange local insights, planning tips, and weather-based recommendations alongside forecasts. By staying close to users and continuously learning from their experiences, I hope to evolve Climatrix into a product that not only helps people plan better, but also brings travelers together through a shared understanding of place, atmosphere, and exploration.
